English Teaching

Highschool English Camp

This past week we went with our highschool students to a beach town called Hua Hin.  Once a year the teachers take the students on an “English camp” to some place where they will have a chance to meet and talk with foreigners.  Hua Hin was full of tourists so they had plenty of people to practice speaking with.  My sister and I had a great time with them.  It is amazing how much the bonds of friendship can grow in just a few short days together at camp =)

Our English Camp Was a Success

For Pook and myself our English activities kicked off last Friday as we went to help with an English day at a secondary school. One of the Thai pastors here called us up and asked if we would be available to help with the special English day at the school. They had planned two days of English activities but didn’t have any native English speakers (or as they say in Thai, an “owner” of the language – เจ้าของภาษา). We led the activities for the morning with about 50-60 7th graders and had a good time with them.

On Sunday we met the YWAM team and welcomed them to Nakhon. They were a great help for our two day English “camp” at the primary school.

At the primary school we led a full day of activities on Monday and a half day on Tuesday. In the morning we had activity “stations” that the students rotated through. This worked really well and we couldn’t have done it without all the YWAMers. A few of our university chat club students also came to help. The activities included the telephone game, charades, spelling words, a memory game with household items, and more.

In the afternoon we had a water balloon toss and we finished up with a big relay race. The kids really enjoyed it and each winning team received some special candy.

On the second day our friends from Krabi, Doc and Zina, led all the students in some Muay Thai exercises where they also practiced some English words like “punch” and “kick” and some parts of the body. We did some more activity stations and sang a few action songs. Afterwards the principal and the teachers took us out for lunch at a place by the ocean.

We had a great time and are pleased that our hard work in planning the camp paid off. There were a few snags of course, and we will need to reevaluate some of our activities for next time, but all in all it worked out really well. We had a great time hosting the YWAM team and are so thankful that they worked a visit to Nakhon into their busy outreach schedule.
